[Musubibito] ~History experience trip to experience Nasu culture evangelists and local millennium hot spring story ~

Musubibito ~History Experience Tour with Nasu Cultural Evangelists and Local Millennium Hot Spring Story ~

Under the theme of the traditional hot spring culture of Nasu Onsen "Kanoyu" and the historical background of the Nasuyumoto Onsen area, we will work together with the Yumi Preservation Society and Nasu Kogen Yumoto Guide Club, which are familiar with history, and take two days to experience the charm of Nasu as a hot spring village.
The local evangelist who protects and preserves Nasu's history and culture and continues to transmit its splendor every day is referred to as "Musubibito". We will deliver valuable opportunities to "listen, walk, see, and experience" the history and culture and legends of Nasumachi for a thousand years.

"What is Musubibito?"

Considering urban areas and tourist centers in various parts of Japan as "Omoya" and a beautiful area that is not yet known as "Hanare", "Grand Mercure Nasu Highlands Resort & Spa" is a hotel located in an area that can be said to be "Hanare". "#Hanare Journey" is a style of travel where you can enjoy a superb view of nature, traditions and culture rooted in the region, and contact with local people. As one of the ways to enjoy this "#Hanare Journey", we propose an original experience program "Musubibito". In this program, people who are familiar with the region and continue to preserve tradition and culture are called “Musubibito” and will play a role in connecting customers and their communities. Grand Mercure in Japan offers programs at hotels such as the source hunter in Beppu Bay and the salt craftsman in Awajishima.

Points of the program

A talk session to learn about the Yumi culture of Nasu Onsenkyo

Rumiko Saito, chairman of the Yumi Preservation Society, will talk about the legend of Kiseki, the history and culture of Nasu no Yumi, and the Yumi no Uta so that you can enjoy a stroll in Nasu Town and the Yumi experience.
Nasumachi, such as the story of the people related to the formation of Kanoyu, which is described as Japan's oldest hot spring, and the story of the beginning of Nasu Yumi, who learned from Kusatsu Onsen at the end of the Taisho era and made his own "Nasu Yumi Uta". You can learn it easily and interestingly while recalling the historical picture map of Nasumachi. Please immerse yourself in the world of the story in the corner of the hotel hot spring lounge, which has an atmosphere with moderate light.

Take a walk from Nasu Onsen Shrine while listening to the history of Kanoyu and Nasu Yumoto areas

Walk along the route full of the history, legends and culture of Nasuyumoto Onsen, from Nasu Onsen Shrine to Kanoyu, and listen to the commentary of the Nasu Kogen Yumoto Guide on 13 historical spots scattered along the way. Take a walk while listening.

When you climb the 129 steps, you will find the hot spring shrine built as the guardian deity of Nasu Onsenkyo. The precincts are dotted with several historical spots, such as the monument of Basho Matsuo and the estimated 800-year-old sacred tree "Living", and you will head to the main shrine while traveling around them.

After passing through the hot spring shrine, the scenery of Sainokawara spreads out from the hill in front of you. Sesshoseki is at the center, and a small amount of volcanic gas still erupts around the area, and you can feel the smell of sulfur. While watching the historical buildings along the way, listening to the legends and stories related to each of them, stroll around the 1.5km route and aim for the final destination, Kanoyu. While feeling the nature of Nasu, you can experience the history of millennia and notice the further charm of this area.

Hot water fir and bathing experience at the historic Kanoyu in Nasu Town

In the past, in Nasu, Yumi was performed by landladies at local inns. With the times, the number of leaders decreased and it was temporarily cut off, but in 2013, volunteers from local sightseeing volunteers formed the "Yumomi Preservation Society" and revived traditional techniques and inherited them carefully to this day . In this program, you will participate in this traditional hot spring fir, which is held every year from May to November at Kanoyu on the last Wednesday of every month.

Wearing a jacket and holding a hot water fir board, using the sound of the bell as a signal, enter the bath with the members of the Yumomi Preservation Society, led by Rumiko Saito, and sing a traditional hot water fir song, skillfully manipulate a special board with a rhythm. You will experience the technique of hot water fir. Clapping is sent from the bathers who visit, and the entire bathhouse is wrapped in a warm sense of unity. After the experience, immerse yourself in the Kanoyu Onsen, which you have rubbed, and enjoy the luxurious moment of healing your mind and body.

After the Yumi experience, you can take a commemorative photo in your undergarment and get an experience certificate with cute pictures drawn.

"Musubibito" Profile
Missionaries who convey the history and culture of Nasu
As an evangelist of Nasu's history and culture, two groups that convey the history and legend of the Nasu Kogen Yumoto area and protect the hot springs and the Yumi culture cooperate and continue to spread the appeal of Nasu Kogen to visitors widely.

<Nasu Kogen Yumoto Guide Club>

This group was established by 14 volunteers who participated in the "Yumoto Local Study Group" held in April 2010. We are working to preserve and manage tourism resources in the Nasu Kogen Yumoto area and spread history and culture. The members include not only locals, but also people who have emigrated to Nasu. I want more people to know the splendor of this area, and I work every day to make it enjoyable for visitors.

<Yumomi Preservation Society>

"Yumomi", which has been handed down mainly by landladies in Minshuku-gai for a long time, has been cut off due to aging. Therefore, people who are willing to protect this precious culture gathered and established a preservation society. In order to convey the history of Kanoyu and Yumi to more people, we inherit stories and songs and spread their appeal.
